The architecture of the Soviet modernism period, 1970-1990s

The pompous Stalinist empire style of the 1940s-1960s was replaced by a more austere and functional «typical» architecture, which with certain degree of changes lasted to the end of the USSR. Later on, the most prominent buildings and architectural works of this period were referred to as the «Soviet modernism».

In the period 1970-1990s, even in rigid framework of the numerous constraints, the Azerbaijani architects created magnificent works of architecture, being able to soften the harsh late-Brezhnev style. Baku reacted with rare hospitality to any strong external architectural influence, answering by adapting and returning to the world its works in a milder form.
